Baltimore Oriole

Last week we spotted our first Baltimore Oriole of the season!  Omnivorous, this bird feeds on small insects, abundant spring nectar, and ripe summer fruits.  To attract them to your home, plant raspberry bushes and put orange slices or jelly out to your feeders!

Even though there are resident black bears in Westchester, you should still enjoy feeding the birds. Put away the expensive, plastic bird feeders which can break and cut a bear, and make a bird feeder that’s safe for black bears: Loop twine through the 2 interior cones of a cardboard, 6 egg carton and tie the ends of the twine up around a branch, shoulder height from the ground. Pour the highest calorie bird seed in the 6 egg receptacles. It’s free so there’s nothing to worry about if a bear takes it, and consumes the calories that a bear needs in an area with too much lawn and not enough hazelnuts. Compassion for birds and bears is better than cold-hearted recommendations from any state conservation agency.
