Morels!
May was morel month, and we were lucky to have spotted a few at the Sanctuary! These mushrooms form mycorrhizal relationships with elm and ash trees. Through the roots, morels receive sugar from the trees, and in exchange, trees gain water and nutrients from the soil. The fruiting body is a mechanism to spread offspring and spores and may be an indicator of poor tree health.
