Eastern Bluebird
The New York State bird has returned home for the breeding season. Aligned with the blooming of plants in open fields, this opportunistic bird takes advantage of an explosion of insect life during northeastern springs. This brilliantly colored insectivore can spot its next meal from 60 feet away before diving to the ground for capture. You can help this species in your own backyard by creating nesting boxes that mimic cavities. -Alice Roosevelt, Westmoreland Naturalist, B.S.
